Alfred and Ada Pope furnished Hill-Stead primarily with Chippendale-style,
Federal-style and Empire pieces. Sewing and gate-leg tables are found
throughout the house. Another unifying theme is the inclusion of a
sofa, or daybed, and secretary in the bedrooms, along with the typical
four-poster bed, bureaus and gilt framed mirrors. The refinement and
elegance of Hill-Stead’s furnishings dramatically depart from
the ornate Victorian and heavy Arts & Crafts aesthetic of the Popes’ original
Cleveland, Ohio, residence.
