The Popes were influenced by the artistic trends of their day, including
the etching fever that swept America and Europe in the late 1800s.
They also were fascinated with all things Japanese, and avidly collected
Japanese woodblock prints. In a letter Alfred Pope wrote while visiting
Claude Monet in Giverny, he describes the artist’s dining room
as “…just hung full of Japanese prints in quiet little
frames.”
