Garden club members and lovers of art and the outdoors are invited
to experience Hill-Stead in depth. During your three-hour experience,
stroll the paths of the Beatrix Farrand-designed Sunken Garden,
featuring 90 varieties of plants and perennials. View meadows,
wetlands and woodlands while hearing about Theodate Pope Riddle’s
design for Hill-Stead, which drew upon the English Landscape and
Colonial Revival movements and included an experimental dairy farm,
trail system and orchards. Tour the 33,000-square-foot 1901 Pope
Riddle House, considered one the country’s finest examples
of Colonial Revival domestic architecture. View renowned French
Impressionist paintings, Japanese prints, decorative art, furniture
and more, all exhibited in
situ.
