An Ardor for Asian Art
Hill-Stead abounds with Asian art and artifacts. Generations of Americans have admired objects made in Asia, and the Popes were collectors of Asian art as well. Ceramics with celadon, imperial yellow, and oxblood glazes are displayed here along with Cantonware in the design that George Washington dined on. Japanese woodblock prints, including the iconic Great Wave by Hokusai, are displayed en masse in Mrs. Pope's suite, and their unconventional perspective, asymmetric composition, and intensity of color highlights the influence of these artists on the Impressionists. Netsuke (a sash toggle), chops (an official stamp), an ivory chess set, happi coats and an obento (lunchbox) are some of the Asian objects that students will see during their visit to Hill-Stead.
