Bienvenue au Hill-Stead

Monet Cap d'Antibes Les Peintures! Les Sculptures! Les Estampes! Students will find France in Farmington! Monet's en plein air paintings of the Giverny countryside, Degas' bather, jockeys, and ballerinas, and Manet's scenes from bohemian life bring insight into French culture of the fin de siècle. The Popes traveled extensively in Europe. During their 1888–89 Grand Tour, a highlight of their trip was the Exposition Universelle, where the family saw Impressionist paintings and work by artist Eugène Carrière, also featured here at Hill-Stead. Their fervent collecting resulted in a treasure trove of objects from France. These would eventually help to inspire the design of their 1901 Farmington home as a showcase for their extraordinary collection.
