School Groups
East Meets West
K – 8
A kimono-clad interpreter greets students, who then enjoy two
hours at Hill-Stead. Participants tour the period rooms, view and learn
how to "read" Japanese woodblock prints and hear about Japanese
art and culture and their influence on the art of the Impressionists.
Younger students try their hand at brush painting. Older students discuss
Tokugawa, Japan, depicted in the prints, and explore various themes,
such as the Japonism craze for collecting that swept late 19th-century
America.
