Immersion Days

K – 12
A visit to Hill-Stead is more than a field trip—it’s an experience. Here, students view art in a setting that is at once beautiful and approachable. Touring the Pope Riddle house where real people once lived and dreamed, they feel inspired to connect art to their own lives, interests and talents. An Immersion Experience nurtures imagination and builds self-confidence.

Visiting teachers are encouraged to work with museum staff to design a full- or half-day of activities that build on Hill-Stead’s unique collection, resources and open landscape. Teachers can choose to lead projects on their own, or arrange for visiting artists to facilitate specialized activities.

French language students enjoy viewing paintings by Degas, Monet and Manet (tours can be given in French); creating their own pastels en plein air in the manner of the French Impressionists; then trying their hand at writing cinquins in the tradition of the French poets. For elementary school students, the museum’s contents are a springboard for hands-on art making—creative writing, dancing, drawing, drama and story telling. The possibilities for creativity and learning are many. Contact Hill-Stead’s Education Coordinator to brainstorm an itinerary that meets your classroom needs.
