At Home with Impressionism

Quote from Theodate Pope Diary, 1888
Grainstacks in Bright Sunlight

Meet Monet and friends! Students contemplate the work of Impressionist masters in the intimacy of the Pope family's home. Several of the artists featured here socialized with the Pope family, and anecdotes of their experiences help to connect their artwork with the culture of the Impressionist era. As contemporaries, Claude Monet and Alfred Pope were both active in the art world, as artist and as patron, and dined together at Giverny in 1894. The Popes dined with James McNeill Whistler the same year, when the artist commented in a letter that "Even the mad collector must pause whether his arms be full of pots and plates or he be overwhelmed with paintings and packing cases — and you have them all." Fourteen years later, in 1908, artist friend Mary Cassatt would come to visit Hill-Stead where her work is also showcased today.
