An American Collector's Legacy
Discover this incredible time capsule! At Hill-Stead, students engage in an exploration of history, art, and architecture as they tour the 1901 Farmington home of the Pope family. This New England village that the family settled in was known for its progressive views, fine architecture and productive farms. This exemplary home was designed for them by their daughter to showcase the family's collection of art treasures gathered during their extensive world travels. The Gilded Age industrialist and art patron Alfred Atmore Pope's exceptional collection spotlights outstanding Impressionist paintings and decorative arts. The rambling country estate harkens back to an era of horse and carriage, gas lighting, stereoscopes, servant call systems and to the region's farming tradition.
