Hill-Stead Museum, the 1901 Colonial Revival-style house was designed by pioneering female architect Theodate Pope Riddle for her parents, Ada and Alfred Pope. For her first architectural project, Theodate designed elegant rooms for her parents’ frequent entertaining and created a canvas for her father’s collection of paintings and decorative arts. In the surrounding grounds, Theodate created a unified landscape that included a working farm, vegetable gardens, greenhouses and ornamental gardens more leisurely activities.
